A label is any kind of identification tag which is affixed with any adhesive on an object, so as to identify the object and its content. There are many types of labels which are used to mark objects. The different forms of labels are categorized according to the base material (referred to as the stock - it is the base on which labels are printed) and by the type of adhesive that the labels use. The most common type of label used in day to day applications is made with a paper stock and its colloquial term as we all know is a “sticker”. The RFID labels come in the category of digital labels which are produced through specialized digital processes.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a hi-tech automatic authentication and identification method which relies on storing and retrieving data remotely using RFID labels, tags or transponders. The RFID labels use radio waves to identify and track items. An RFID label is an element which is affixed to or incorporated into a product, equipment, animal or person for the purpose of tracking and identification using radio waves. Generally an RFID system consists of RFID labels or tags, RFID readers, and back-end systems that process RFID events. Most RFID tags contain two parts. The first one being an integrated circuit for storing and processing information. The second part is an antenna for receiving and transmitting the signal.

An RFID label contains a microchip coupled together with an antenna for transmitting the information stored in the microchip.
