    Label Inspection and Counter Options
    

    The Label Inspection option, INSP, adds a Label Inspection Fixture to your TWIN-CAT-2. It has two rollers over which your labels run as they are presented for inspection. You can also wind-in or wind-out at the same time as you perform the inspection operation. When inspection is complete, you can conveniently rewind the labels back onto their original Core by just reversing the direction of the Rewind Spindles.     Label Unwinders
    

    Label Unwinders save time and labor by providing a convenient way to manage your supply roll of labels as it feeds into the printer. You can use larger rolls of labels to minimize your unit label cost. Also, the supply roll of labels does not have to be refreshed as often, adding convenience. Unwinders are particularly valuable in a production environment where maximum throughput is desired. As opposed to label rolls internal to the printer, external rolls are always visible, making it easy to monitor the status of your label supply. How to Select a Label Unwinder There are two categories of Label Unwinders: Powered and Non-powered. A powered Unwinder provides motorized assistance to feed labels into the printer. A Non-powered Unwinder is a less expensive, passive unit, that provides no unwind assistance. Non-powered Unwinders provide a small amount of resistance or back tension to keep the labels tidy as they go into the printer. With Non-powered Unwinders, the printer must physically pull the blank label stock off the roll and into the printer. Many printers are not strong enough to do this. Even if the printer is able to pull the labels into itself, doing so may put significant

    stress on the printer, particularly with heavy label rolls. This may cause registration problems or lead to early failure of the printer’s label advance mechanism. Any LABELMATE Label Rewinder except the CAT-40G can also be used as an Unwinder. In the role of an Unwinder, the Rewinder is “put into reverse” with a low torque setting to provide a small amount of back tension just as a Non-powered Unwinder does. Here the Rewinder is functioning with a greater degree of control over back tension than a Non-powered Unwinder can provide. A Rewinder used as an Unwinder cannot be used to assist the unwind process because there is no provision to increase or decrease unwinding action as the printer starts and stops. For this you specifically need a Powered Unwinder. A Powered Unwinder is always preferred over a Non-powered Unwinder. Additionally, a Powered Unwinder can always be used as a Rewinder by temporarily blocking the Sensor Arm in the “ON” position. Unless otherwise stated, an Outer Label Flange is optional on all Unwinders because a roll being unwound does not need an Outer Flange.

    
    Powered Label Unwinders
    

    LABELMATE UCAT-2 and UCAT-40 Powered Unwinders are specialized for the unwinding job. They track the printer label usage and unwind on demand to provide the most sophisticated control for the unwind process. When the printer takes in blank label stock, it lifts the Sensor Arm on the UCAT-2 or UCAT-40, signaling its demand for more labels. The Unwinder then advances label stock under power until there is sufficient stock that the Sensor Arm relaxes and stops the assisted unwinding. The Unwinder then

    waits until the printer once again signals its demand for more labels by lifting the Sensor Arm. The amount and speed of power assist can be adjusted with the TORQUE Control Knob. The UCAT-40 and UCAT-2-CHUCK Unwinders provide the most advanced unwinding solution available and are recommended for ease of use and production applications. These models include a “Quick-Chuck” Core Holder for the most convenient mounting and removal of label rolls and cores.

Slitting Saves Time and Money By slitting labels instead of printing individual narrow ones, you gain three important benefits: 1) Increased throughput / speed of label production; 2) Increased print head life because the print head is being used over more of its width; 3) You can print more labels per ribbon because the print ribbon is being used over more of its width.It all adds up to cost savings and time savings. LABELMATE Slitters use inexpensive linear snap-off blades and a proprietary system to stabilize the blades and ensure a uniform cut at all slitting speeds. In-Line and Off-Line Slitting There are two methods of label slitting using a LABELMATE Slitter: 1) In-line and 2) Off-line. 1) With In-Line Slitting, the Slitter is placed directly at the output of the printer. The slitting occurs as the labels exit the printer and pass through the Slitter before they are wound up onto your label rewinder. In-Line slitting is suitable only for occasional slitting where you are using no more than two blades. 2) In Off-Line Slitting, the printing and slitting operations are separate. First, you print and rewind your labels normally. Then you bring the rewound roll to your LABELMATE Off-Line Slitting Station. Off-Line slitting is more efficient in a production situation than In-Line slitting. For one thing, you can run your printing operation continuously without having to stop to set up the Slitter for each print job or label roll. In addition, the set-up of the Slitter is easier because you are not concerned with printer alignment or the printer starting and stopping. LABELMATE’s money-saving Off-Line Slitting Station Packages consist of a Label Unwinder where you put the roll to be slit, the Label Slitter itself, and a Label Rewinder to wind up the multiple rolls of labels after they pass through the Slitter plus accessories. In both In-Line and Off-Line Slitting, your LABELMATE Label Rewinder pulls the label web through the slitting blades (except when the self-powered Slitter S-100-SP is used Off-Line).

    How to Select a Slitting Solution 1) How wide is the Label Web you want to slit? Up to 6-inches wide, use a Model S-100 Slitter or Slitter Package; For wider widths up to 10-inches, use a Model S-200 Slitter or Slitter Package. 2) For occasional In-Line Slitting at the output of your printer with no more than two cuts, you can use either Model S-100 or S-200. For more blades or volume production slitting applications, select an Off-Line Slitting Package. These complete solutions will save you money and provide everything you need for slitting. 3) Next, choose your Rewinder Model. Choose a CAT-2-CHUCK (6” width), a CAT-2-CHUCK-10 (up to 10” width), or CAT-40G-NSA Rewinder that includes a “Quick-Chuck” quick-locking Core Chuck. The “Quick-Chuck” will grip and release your individual narrow label cores all at once, providing the maximum convenience in placing and removing your cores and label rolls. The smaller MINI-CAT Rewinders, Models MC-10A and MC-11, are not suitable for slitting. 4) To keep the slit label rolls from interleaving or sticking together, and to make them easy to remove from the Rewinder when slitting is finished, you need Label Separator Plates. We recommend Metal Separator Plates for the inner and outer Plates and a thin Plastic Separator Plate in-between each label roll. 5) We also suggest ordering a set of replacement High-Speed Slitting Blades, Part No.HSB-10, along with your Slitter. These blades are very sharp, long-life blades made in Solingen, Germany, long known for fine cutting instruments. Ten blades are supplied in a handy plastic dispenser for convenience and safety. IMPORTANT NOTE: The minimum slit width for all standard Slitters is 3/4” because of the diameter of the Blade Lock Screw. On special request, a 3/8” minimum slit width is available.

    
    
    

    Label Slitters, Separator Plates and Accessories

    NOTE: Slitters require a CAT-2-CHUCK with High-Torque Option (HTO) or aTWIN-CAT-2 Rewinder
    to pull the Label Web through the cutting blades.
    

    Use a Label Slitter to conveniently produce narrow labels. Print them several across (“up”) and then slit them to the desired width. “In-line” slitting at the output of your printer usually works fine for labels 2- or 3-up.

    For 3- or more blades you should use an Off-Line Slitting Station for convenience and to avoid label registration problems. Off-Line Slitting Stations are also preferred for production applications. For more information, please see Page 14.

Self-Powered Off-Line Slitter

The new S-100-SP Self-powered Label Slitter simplifies label slitting by providing a powered Pinch Roller to pull the labels through the Cutting Blades rather than having to rely on the Label Rewinder to pull the labels. This results in a constant cutting speed of about 12” per second (305-mm/sec.) and means you can rewind using any LABELMATE Rewinder equipped with a “Quick-Chuck.” The S-100-SP is supplied with two Blades. You can add additional BH-1 Blade Holders for a total of up

to five Blades. The S-100-SP is a great choice for reliable low-cost label slitting. “Quick-Chucks” are standard on all Premium Model Rewinders and Unwinders. Disadvantages of Fin-Style Core Holders Fin-Style Core Holders use multiple Fins, or Vanes, that extend radially from the Rewind/Unwind Shaft. The cardboard label Core slides over the Fins and is held by a friction fit between the Fins and the inside of the Core. While the Fin-Style Core Holder is economical, it has several disadvantages. Mounting or removing a roll of labels often requires significant force. This force, if not applied very carefully, may result in undesirable “telescoping” of the label web. In some cases the label roll may fall off the Core altogether and spill onto the floor. Secondly, a full roll of labels has considerable weight. Managing this weight when mounting or removing a label roll over the Core Fins can be challenging. The force required to push the label roll over the Fins can also cause the Unwinder or Rewinder to move out of position. Further, cardboard label Cores are notorious for their variation in inside diameter. One label Core may fit the Core Fins just fine, while the next one may be either too loose or too tight. While there is a means to adjust the Fins for tightness, it takes several minutes and can be inconvenient and annoying when you’re trying to finish a production job. The only real advantage of Fin-Style Core Holders is their lower cost. They are OK for casual rewind or unwind jobs, but for a production environment where you want maximum convenience and efficiency, choose a LABELMATE “Quick-Chuck.”

“Quick-Chuck” Model Number Key: C [Diameter in inches or mm] – [Width in mm] e.g.: C1.5-170 = 1.5” dia., 170-mm width “Quick-Chucks” are precision, maintenance-free Core Chucks for quick loading and unloading of label rolls. They are ideal for heavy rolls and production operations. Because they grip multiple cores equally, they are perfect for slitting too. “Quick-Chucks” are well suited for in-house projects and are an easy, rugged solution for many OEM applications. All “Quick-Chucks” fit a 0.625” diameter shaft with flat. A setscrew locks the “Quick-Chuck” to the flat on the shaft. “Quick-Chucks” are supplied with an Inner Flange and an Allen wrench for the setscrew. “Quick-Chucks” are standard on premium models of LABELMATE Rewinders and Unwinders.
